International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8 March every year. It is marked by several events all over the world to celebrate women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries, their communities, and the world. The theme for International Women’s Day 2019 is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”.
In line with this theme, United Nations in Nepal and the British Council, in collaboration with Lalitpur Metropolitan City, are celebrating women in Nepal who, in different pioneering ways, have defied gender stereotypes present in all their communities and who have successfully paved the way for their peers and the next generation of young people to excel in areas traditionally inaccessible to women. This photo exhibition features women from different walks of life who have challenged gender stereotypes, are change makers in their communities, and have overcome social, economic or physical barriers in their lives.
Alongside the photo stories, existing and curated content from British Council’s ‘Creating Heroines’ project also forms part of the exhibition. Creating Heroines is a collaborative international project initiated by the British Council. Bringing together female artists, graphic novelists and illustrators from across South Asia and the South Asian diaspora, the project explores the themes of overlooked heroines from the past and imagines heroines for the future. It explores the stories behind the side-lined heroines of history and mythology, and uses them to inspire new creations including zines, comics and other media. Creating Heroines aims to spark debate, challenge stereotypes and share women's stories.
The real-life and fictional heroines showcased in this exhibition stand as clear examples that with the right kind of determination and persistence, women can, and will, be anything they desire to be.
The exhibition will be held between 8 and 9 March, 2019 at the Lalitpur Metropolitan City Office Gardens. Entry is free!
