Background and transformation: Anjali Sah, a bright and determined 14-year-old student from Rautahat, radiates confidence as she introduces herself. A member of the GEMS Uthan Community Learning Centre (CLC), Anjali shares how the program has become a turning point in her educational and personal development. With clear thoughts and a happy demeanour, she speaks of the changes she has experienced since becoming involved in the initiative, especially in the areas of English language, digital literacy, and social skills.
Improvements in English speaking: Although Anjali always liked English, she admits that it has become significantly easier since joining the GEMS program. She proudly explains that she can now pronounce complex words correctly and understand the words by translating them into Nepali, something she wasn't able to do earlier. Her growing ability to comprehend, translate, and articulate in English has not only improved her academic performance but also boosted her self-esteem. English, already her favourite subject, has become even more enjoyable, strengthening her dream of working in hotel management or fashion design. "Before, I didn't know how to read big words; now I can translate them and pronounce them correctly"
Digital empowerment: Another key transformation in Anjali's journey has been her digital empowerment. She confidently affirms her ability to use a laptop, create and save documents in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, and access educational content through social media and YouTube. The digital skills she has acquired have helped her extend her learning beyond the classroom, enabling her to seek answers independently and build a modern, self-directed learning routine. "Yes, I know how to make and save Word and PowerPoint files. I also use YouTube and social media to learn what I don't understand."
Group engagement and advocacy: Before joining GEMS, Anjali rarely participated in group activities. Now, group study has become a core part of her learning experience. Through the club, she has discovered the value of peer learning and collaboration. She shares how group study has helped her better understand topics, clarify doubts, and develop the confidence to ask questions, a significant shift from her earlier reluctance to speak up or seek help. "Earlier, I never did group study. Now I do it comfortably. If I don't know something at home, I ask in the group." This transformation reflects the inclusive and supportive learning environment that GEMS supports.
Aspirations and inspiration: Anjali aspires to study hotel management and work abroad. She also aspires to consider a career in fashion design if she cannot pursue a career in hotel management. Anjali's dreams are rooted in the encouragement she receives from her family, especially her father, a tailor by profession. Her aspirations reflect a blend of personal interest, family motivation, and newfound awareness gained through education.' Her growth in language fluency, digital literacy and social skills is evident not only in her words but also in her cheerful expression and assured tone. She is just not preparing for exams – she is preparing for the future. "I am thrilled, and I have learned a lot. There has been a big change in me."
