Angela D.C. is more than just a diligent student at Nepal National Model Secondary School — she’s a rising leader in her community. As the Peer Group Leader (PGL) of the GEMS Club at the Mehelkuna Community Learning Centre in Gurbhakot Municipality, Angela is helping inspire a new generation of confident, capable girls in Nepal’s Karnali Province. In a region where the female literacy rate stands at just 69.4% (according to the 2021 national census), her journey is a powerful example of what happens when girls are given space to grow, lead, and believe in themselves.
Angela says, I used to find it challenging to study, but after joining the GEMS club, I enjoy learning. The club has helped me better understand English grammar, and I get to practice English and computer skills there. I am inspired by the stories of international figures and professionals mentioned in the club book (EDGE course). These stories have motivated me and guided me in defining my aspirations.
Angela was nominated to speak at a conference titled ‘Karnali Daughters’ Conference’, which was held in May 2025 in her hometown and organised by the Sri Jyoti Foundation. The event was a milestone for adolescent girls across Karnali Province, and Angela proudly took part. She spoke about the problems and challenges faced by girls like herself in the field of education, as well as the social stigmas and pressures they encounter. Angela attributes this credit to the GEMS Club, which helped build her confidence and skills in expressing herself. “The club didn’t just teach me English, Digital and social skills,” she said, “it also taught me how to talk to people, make my own decisions and stand strong.”
Angela has just completed her Secondary Education Examination (SEE), and she believes the club played a key role in her success. “The computer classes helped,” she said.” Reflecting on her journey, Angela says the GEMS Club has changed her life. “I wasn’t this confident before,” she admitted. “Now, I feel like I can speak anywhere, with anyone.” Angela’s story is a good example of how peer learning spaces, such as the GEMS Club, are helping girls in Karnali Province, Nepal, to build not only their knowledge but also their confidence and future.
“I had never spoken in such a big gathering before, but because of the practice in the GEMS club, I got the courage to speak. I spoke about the problems girls like me are facing, from education challenges to social pressures.” Angela D.C. PGL GEMS club Surkhet
